Korea 일관기 [刊寫者未詳] [刊寫年未詳] Tongshinsa envoy visit travelogue by Nam, Ok(南玉, 1722-1770) who visited Japan in1763 as a writer for national ceremonies. He came from the Uiryeong Nam clan, and his courtesy name is Sion(時韞), and penname Chuwol(秋月). He passed public post examination in 1753. In 1762, he was involved in Cho, Jae-Ho(趙載浩)’s treason, exiled, and released in the next August, thanks to then Vice-Premier Hong, Bong-Han(洪鳳漢)’s plea. In the same year, Lee, Deuk-Bae(李得培, 1715-1774), who was appointed as Tongshinsa’s Jongsagwan post pleaded Nam’s appointment as a transcriber, and Seo, Myung-Eung(徐命膺, 1716-1787), head of Tongshinsa, recommended him as a writer for national ceremonies in May 1763. In June, right before the beginning of the envoy visit, his appointment as a writer for national ceremonies was finalized. It seems that envoy corps recommended his appointment without hesitation even though he was in prison, thanks to his impressive writings. Tonshinsa head was replaced with Cho, Eum(趙曮), Busa Lee, In-Bae(李仁培), and Jongsagwan post Kim, Sang-Ik(金相翊), but he continued serving his duties and being on a tour as a Tongshinsa writer. On his tour, he met Japanese authors and exchanged poems he wrote. 『Record of Visit to Japan』 is a 4-volume literature in which Nam recorded what he experienced personally as well as how his exchange of poetry and written correspondences with Japanese writers was, which is befitting to his duty as a Joseon’s officially nominated writer. And the volume is missing in the copy housed in the National Library of Korea, yet it is the original copy which had been in possession of Nam, Ok’s descendant Nam, Sang-Hak(南相鶴); the other copy housed in the National Institute of Korean History have the entire volumes, yet they were transcribed in 1927 by Inaba Iwakichi(稲葉岩吉), a member of the Korean History Compilation Committee, Governor-General of Korea who borrowed the original copy from Nam, Sang-Hak(南相鶴) and transcribed it.
