This is technically a traditional hero novel, but it presents itself as “new novel” on the cover to give a fresh impression and appeal to readers. The novel takes elements from history such as Goryeo era, Gyeon Hwon, and Dangun. The most noticeable appearance of a historic figure is Dangun; he blesses the protagonist Kim Sun Il with a son and gives him prophecy. Mun Baek, Kim Sun Il’s son, is separated from his parents by the evil, trained by a mysterious guru, and saves the country—which is a typical hero novel story.

실제로는 영웅소설의 특징을 갖추고 있는 고전소설이지만 독자들에게 새로운 소설이라는 것을 드러내기 위해 표지에 신소설이라고 되어 있다. 고려시대, 견훤, 단군 등의 역사를 차용해 내용이 전개되는데 가장 특징적인 것은 주인공 ‘김선일’이 아들을 점지하고 미래를 예견하는 인물로서 단군이 등장한다는 것이다. 소설 속 인물인 ‘김선일’의 아들 ‘문백’은 어린 나이에 악인에 의해 부모와 떨어지고, 신이한 인물에게 교육받고 위기에 처한 나라를 구하며 영웅소설 속 주인공의 전형적인 과정을 밟는다.
