A book to teach noblewomen how to think, behave, and talk. Yi, Hwang is conjectured to be its author, yet this is not a confirmed fact. This book starts with, “Yi, Hwang said,” which was written by Yi to honor his widowed mother who made much efforts for her children’s education and marriage.
There are 5 chapters: Courtesy for Women, Discipline of Mind and Behavior, Home Management, Norms, and Filial Conduct. It was underscored that once one is married and becomes a wife, one should love one’s husband’s parents, obey one’s husband’s words, and educate one’s children well as a virtuous and honorable woman.
Noticeably, generally there are many overlapping teachings with Lee, Duek-Mu’s 『Sasojeol(士小節)』(1775).

양반집 여성을 대상으로 여성이 갖춰야할 마음자세와 행동거지, 말씨 등을 가르치기 위한 교육서다. 퇴계 이황이 펴낸 책으로 알려져 있으나 정확하지 않다. 첫 문장이 “퇴계선생이 말씀하시기를”로 시작하는데, 이황이 어머니가 과부로서 부지런히 힘써서 자녀를 잘 결혼시키고 교육한 일을 추모한 글이다.
구성은 다섯 편으로 부의, 수신편, 치가편, 규범록, 효행편이다. 혼인해서 부인이 되었으니 시부모에게 효도하고 남편 말을 어기지 말며 자녀를 잘 가르치는 ‘요조숙녀’가 될 것을 잊지 말라고 당부했다.
전반적으로 이덕무가 펴낸 『사소절(士小節)』(1775년)과 유사한 내용이 많은 점이 특징이다.
