• Record of face reading of Joseon people by Niyama Daiho(新山退甫, 1723-1775) who met with the Joseon envoy and read their face in 1764. This record was printed in Osaka. Face reading, physiognomy, was spread from Nagasaki to Kyoto during Kyōhō (享保, 1716-1736) by Gwak, Ong(郭翁). Niyama, his successor, was previously Hanshi (military official) in Sendai(仙臺) but later worked as a face reader in Kyoto and Osaka. When the Joseon envoy arrived in Osaka in the following January after their departure in 1763, Niyama met them and read Tongshinsa captains’ faces who remained in Osaka in March, and lower-level staffs’ faces who returned from Edo in April. In this book, there are 3 prefaces authored Okada Hakku(岡田白駒), Tsuyama Nanto(陶山南濤), and Akutagawa Tankyu(芥川丹丘); 「Sanggampilhwa(相鑒筆話)」 on face-reading by Niyama’s disciple Hayashi Doan(林東菴); 「Insangpilhwa(人相筆話)」, a collection written correspondences of Niyama’s face reading; 「Joseon Visitors’ Appearances(韓客形容)」, paintings of Tongshinsa figures painted by Niyama’s disciple Abemaki Mato(棈馬東); 「General Discussion on Joseon People(韓人通論)」, a general theory of reading of Joseon people’s faces; 「Explanation on Facial Features(部位各目解)」 on names and explanation of facial features; and 「Name of Disciples (門人姓名)」, a list of Niyama’s disciples. 『Joseon Visitors’ Facial Appearance』 is the only collection of correspondences written by face readers. Niyama had a strong curiosity about foreigners’ faces, so he enthusiastically met Tongshinsa envoys and observed their faces closely. The portraits in this collection are incredibly precise, such as those of Jungsa, Busas, Jongsagwans, doctors, painters, translators, military officers, and others. Also, differences in face features and bone structures between Joseon people and Japanese people recorded herein are surprisingly detailed. This literature has a great value as a record of daily life and culture of that time. (rdf:langString) (en)
