  • Printed books published over a 50-year window encompassing Bunroku, Keichō, Genna, and Kan’ei periods are categorically called ‘old print edition’ to distinguish them from printed copies published after the mid-Edo period. Politicians such as Emperor Go-Yōzei, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Toyotomi Hideyori and temples such as those in Mount Hiei and Mount Kōya, and doctors produced publications as diverse as Buddhism texts, Chinese texts as well as Japanese literature, history book, medical science books, and other practical books. After publication became for-profit business in the Edo period, movable-type printing could not meet the growing demand, and the mainstream technology gradually shifted toward woodblock printing. (rdf:langString) (ja)
