  • In the Joseon era, referential dictionaries were actively compiled and used thanks to the advancement of archival culture. Whenever political or social needs arose, the government mobilized scholars en masse to compile, publish, and disseminate numerous encyclopedias that contained a systemically organized array of information. Compilation works were actively published in the private sector as well. Examples include yuseo (類書, encyclopedia), which organized questions from state examinations and phrases from ancient writings based on certain principles, okpyeon (玉篇, dictionary of Chinese characters), and lexical dictionaries for diplomatic documents, official documents, letters, and poems.
