  • There were several terms to refer to envoy corps to Japan based on purposes of visit but the most widely used term to date is Tongshinsa(通信使), which literally means envoy who conveys trust. As diplomatic ties between the two countries became stablized, Tongshinsa took bigger role as a cultural ambassador. The primary purposes of Tongshinsa’s visit to Japan was to deliver government document, celebrate accession of a incoming shogun, and to reaffirm friendship between the two countries. Even so, on the way to Edo across the sea, people from the two countries exchanged their cultures enthusiastically. We are following traces of cultural exchanges between Joseon and Japan bridged by Tongshinsa by appreciating records housed in the National Library of Korea. (rdf:langString) (en)
  • 일본에 보내는 사신의 명칭은 파견 목적에 따라 여러 가지가 사용되었으나 현재까지 대표적으로 일컬어지는 명칭은 “통신사(通信使)”이다. 말 그대로 믿음을 통하는 사신이라는 의미이다. 두 나라의 관계가 안정되어 갈수록 통신사는 문화사절로서의 의미가 커졌다. 막부의 쇼군 즉위를 축하하고 양국의 우호를 확인하는 국서를 전달하기 위해 파견한 것이나, 바다를 건너 에도까지 가는 동안 부수적으로 활발한 문화적인 교류가 이루어졌다. 소장 자료를 통해 통신사를 계기로 이루어진 양국 문화교류의 흔적을 따라가 보고자 한다.
