Joseon was truly a ‘country of records’. They tenaciously recorded every practice of the kings in many different formats. The purpose of recording was to show the former kings’ deeds to their followers as a reference of governing; therefore, every step was written down with great care. To prepare for big events, each time they established offices called Do Gam (都監) as event planning center. The chronological records or event planning and process written by the center is called Deung Rok (謄錄). The aftermath was taken care of by another office, Uigwe center. They documented every detail of the event: papers, staff, supplies, event portrait paining, and even rewards to those who contributed. This record was called Uigwe, and used as resources for next events. Joseon’s positive obsession with recording created not only ‘The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty’, but also practical casebooks like Deung Rok and Uigwe. The purpose of them was to leave as much information as possible to the next generation for better administration.

조선은 기록의 나라였다. 왕의 행위를 다양한 형식으로 기록하였다. 기록의 목적이 후대 왕의 정치에 참고자료로 사용하기 위함이었기 때문에 가능한 자세하게 기록했다. 특정 행사를 치루기 위해 행사 중앙본부인 도감(都監)을 설치했는데, 도감에서 행사에 관한 일체의 과정을 날짜에 따라 세세하게 기록해 놓은 것이 등록(謄錄)이다. 행사가 끝난 뒤에 다시 의궤청을 설치해 행사의 모든 것-각종문서, 인원, 소요물품, 반차도, 행사 후 유공자의 포상에 이르기까지 상세하게 기록했는데 이것이 의궤(儀軌)이다. 의궤는 왕이 보는 어람용, 해당 부서용, 사고(史庫) 보관용 등이 만들어 졌다. 이렇게 만들어진 의궤는 왕이 참여하거나 주관하는 각종 국가 전례와 행사 등에 참고자료로 사용되었다. 조선의 기록정신은 조선왕조실록을 만들어 냈을 뿐만 니라 등록과 의궤 등의 풍부한 실무 사례집을 만드는데 까지 이르렀다. 그리고 그 목적은 가능한 많은 것을 후세에 남겨 조금 더 좋은 정치를 이룩하기 위함이었다.
