He was famous for his prints of Kabuki actors, beautiful women, and sumo (Japanese traditional wrestling). A favorite pictorial joke in the Edo period (1600–1867) was the depiction of sumo performed by unusual participants. In this print Kunisada shows the meeting of the two strong boys of Japanese folktales, Momotarō and Kintarō. Momotarō, born from a giant peach, defeated ogres with the help of his trusty dog, monkey, and pheasant. Kintarō (here called Kaidōmaru), grew up on a mountain with animals for his friends. In this match, Momotarō's pheasant appears as the gyōji (referee), while Kintarō's bear acts the yobidashi (announcer). Such nishiki-e served the function of increasing the popularity of sumo. The National Diet Library, which holds this work, has more than 100 of Kunisada’s sumo prints. From the name and the seal, this work can be dated 1843–44."@en , "桃太郎、快童丸の相撲の錦絵。画師歌川国貞(1786-1864)は幕末期に活躍し、役者絵、美人画の画師として著名であるが、相撲絵も多数描いている。制作年代は落款、改印から天保14、15年(1843-4)頃と推定される。" ; dcterms:date "[江戸後期]" , "[Late Edo Era]" ; dcterms:dateSubmitted "2020-12-09"^^xsd:date ; dcterms:description "豊国等画" ; dcterms:issued "1800" ; dcterms:title "[相撲錦絵]" , "Momotaro and Kaidomaru Wrestling"@en ; schema:audience "一般" , "General" ; schema:category eadlcollection:NDL_Other , eadlcollection:JapanCollection , eadlcollection:NDL_Classical_Material_Collection ; schema:datePublished "2020-12-09"^^xsd:date ; owl:sameAs ; foaf:thumbnail .
