Myungsarock 溟槎錄 명사록 [刊寫年未詳] National Library of Korea true [刊寫年未詳] 溟槎錄 국립중앙도서관 명사록 2020-11-30 [刊寫年未詳] [刊寫者未詳] 명사록 2020-11-30 National Library of Korea 吳大齡(朝鮮) 著 [刊寫地未詳] 명사록 PU Korea chi Myungsarock 국립중앙도서관 KOL000009301 Envoy visit record written by Oh, Dae-Ryung(吳大齡, 1701-?) who visited Japan as a Chinese letter export of the Tongshinsa corps in 1763. Oh was from the Haeju Oh clan, and his courtesy name is Daenyun(大年), and penname is Changho(長湖). Not much has been known about his life, but he took the 1st place in translation examination in 1717, and served Cheumjung(僉正) post at Joseon’s foreign language translation and education institution Sayeokwon. On his diary on Nov 27, he said to Tongshinsa head Cho, Eum(趙曮, 1719-1777), “I am 63 years old. I have been to Beijing 10 times, Shenyang, twice, and Fengcheng, once.” On Nov 29, he said to Busa Lee, In-Bae(李仁培, 1716-1774), “I came because it has been 15 years since my last envoy visit, and I want to look around Japan.” It is mentioned in other author’s envoy visit record that Oh made many people frown because he borrowed and travelled in a palanquin by making excuses that his condition is not good, which is unacceptable considering his social rank. These tell us that as a retired Chinese translator who went to China dozen times before, he applied the envoy visit to Japan, despite his age, simply because he wanted to travel Japan. 『Myungsarock』 has Oh’s travel diary and 「Churok(追錄)」. Oh wrote diaries daily from August 3, 1763 to July 8 of the following year, when he returned and reported the visit. 「Churok(追錄)」is a travelogue in which he briefly recorded Japanese culture, along with the Tsushima Island and the Ryukyu Kingdom’s geography and history. His log does not have detailed observations of long pages; yet as a seasoned envoy staff, his comparison analysis of Japan’s cities and cultures against those of Beijing, is quite objective. He rarely exaggerated nor downplayed Japan, which makes his record valuable as a literature by an author with multiple envoy visit experiences. What was recorded in the manuscript attached to the cover page of its body part, implies that Oh’s record written in 1763 (Yeongjo 39) was sold later in 1928. It was listed on the UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme register in 2017.
