. "卞琢, 변탁"@ko . "Envoy record written by a captain who was one of envoy corps in 1763. The author is speculated to be Byun, Tak(卞琢, 1742-?), a captain of the second envoy giship who anchored his ship and stayed in Osaka, instead of continuing trip to Edo. Byun is a military officer from a nobleman’s family in Dongrae(東萊). Byun was included into the envoy corps as a crewman, but later promoted to the captain of bokship (envoy ship for lower class), and then the captain of giship (envoy ship for higher class). Envoy’s head Jo-Eum(趙曮,1719-1777), who trusted Byun when Byun served busa post of Dongrae, selected him as one of crewmen and then promoted him to a captain when the timing was right. \n 『Gyemisusarok (1763 Envoy Mission Account)』 is comprised of 18 mission items and 「General Record on Gyemisusa(癸未隨槎摠錄)」. 18 missions items, placed in the first half, describe how 6 envoy ships were built before the envoy visit. He described wood cutting and transporting, size of the vessels, salary payment to ship builders, supervision of shipbuilding, installation of moving stove, and recruitment of marines and boatmen based on what he experienced in person. 「General Record on Gyemisusa 」, placed in the second half, is written in four-letter poem format of 672 lines but without rhyming words. It is about what he went through while all the way from Busan to Osaka, in which all names of ports and locations he visited are recorded, along with facts about sailing such as spots with strong currents or rocks, ship repairs, and reward for assistants. Technical aspects are well captured and recorded in his observation of Japanese culture, which would be his interest as a captain. \n 『Gyemisusarok』 is the only travel record authored by a captain. It is a rare literature showing what a surrounder and a military man from a non-capital region experienced in Japan during the envoy visit. This literature was listed on the UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme register in 2017."@en . "Gyemisusarok (1763 Envoy Mission Account)"@en . . "1763" . "National Library of Korea"@en . "kor" .
