Lee was from the Jeoneui Lee clan. His courtesy name is Gyesu(季修) and penname is Hoigye(廻溪) and Gilam (吉菴). He passed the civil servant examination in 1756 and later on he was promoted to the Daesagan post. He travelled to Japan after his appointment as the Busa of Tongshinsa with a mission to celebrate Tokugawa Ieharu(德川家治)’s succession in 1763. Lee wrote letters during the envoy visit, mostly about asking his family’s updates. This literature was named ‘Insuk(仁叔)’ because Lee addressed himself as Insuk—as his nephew and niece address him—in his last letter in this literature. Tongshinsa left Joseon’s capital in August 3, 1763 and arrived in Dongrae in August 20. And the envoy ships set sailed on October 6 and returned to Busan on June 22 in the following year. His letter written in September was sent from Busan, and the others from Japan. Diplomatic documents bound to the Joseon government used to be delivered from Tsushima Island to Dongrae by the fastest vessel available, and letters from Tongshinsa staffs to their families were delivered altogether. For diplomatic documents which required prompt replies and exchanges, replies to these documents used to be delivered from Joseon to Japan as promptly as possible. Letters in 『Insukgagan』 are valuable records that tell us what Tongshinsa members felt and experienced during their envoy visits and shows how letters were delivered from Japan to Joseon. 1冊(11張);42.6 x 29.5 cm chi
