- Abstract
- Printed books published over a 50-year window encompassing Bunroku, Keichō, Genna, and Kan’ei periods are categorically called ‘old print edition’ to distinguish them from printed copies published after the mid-Edo period. Politicians such as Emperor Go-Yōzei, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Toyotomi Hideyori and temples such as those in Mount Hiei and Mount Kōya, and doctors produced publications as diverse as Buddhism texts, Chinese texts as well as Japanese literature, history book, medical science books, and other practical books. After publication became for-profit business in the Edo period, movable-type printing could not meet the growing demand, and the mainstream technology gradually shifted toward woodblock printing.(en)
文禄・慶長・元和・寛永の約50年間にわたり、活字印刷により出版された書物を、近世中期以降の活字印刷物と区別して「古活字版」と称している。後陽成天皇、徳川家康、豊臣秀頼等の為政者、比叡山、高野山などの寺院、医者などにより出版され、出版物の種類は、仏書、漢籍のほか、国書の文学書、歴史書、医書などの実用書に及ぶ。江戸時代に出版業が営利事業として成立するようになると、印刷部数に限りがあるこの活字印刷は増大する需要に対応しきれず、次第に出版の主流は整版へと移っていった。(ja)
