This is the oldest existing book of movable metal type print in the world, which is inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. This book was printed with movable metal type at Heungdeoksa Temple (興德寺) in Cheongju (淸州) in the third year of King U’s reign (1377) of Goryeo. However, it is known that, in the early 13th century, almost 150 years before the publication of this book, Goryeo had already printed books using movable metal type made of copper or other metals. The compilation of this book was completed in Mt. Seongbul (成佛山) in Goesan near Cheongju in 1372 during the late Goryeo era. As shown in the title, this book can be regarded as a compilation of selected main tenets of Zen Buddhism from Zen Teachings of Buddhist Sages (直指心體, Jikji simche), rather than an original creation. The content of this book summarizes the teachings of Buddhism among the diverse writings and discussions of 162 sages who upheld Buddhist traditions after Buddha. This book covers all areas of Buddhist literature, encompassing the biographies of past patriarchs published in Song China. The National Library of France houses a copy of the second volume of this book, the world’s oldest book of movable metal type print published at Heungdeoksa Temple in Cheongju, and the entire collection of the woodblock-printed edition is stored in the National Library of Korea.(en)
이 책은 세계 최초 또는 최고의 금속활자본이라는 사실이 국제적으로 공인되어 세계기록유산으로 등재되었다. 이 책은 고려 우왕 3년(1377)에 당시 서울인 개성에서 멀리 떨어진 중원 지방의 조그만 사찰 흥덕사(興德寺)에서 여러 종류의 잡다한 활자로 인쇄되었다. 고려는 이미 이보다 한 세기 반 이전인 13세기 초반에 구리 등의 금속으로 활자를 만들어 서적을 인쇄한 사실은 잘 알려져 있다. 이 책은 고려 말 경한(景閑, 1298~1373?)이 죽기 직전인 1372년 청주와 가까운 괴산의 성불산(成佛山)에서 편찬을 완성하였다. 경한이 이 책의 제목을 <백운화상초록불조직지심체요절(白雲和尙抄錄佛祖直指心體要節)>이라고 구체적으로 밝힌 점으로 보아 자신의 순수한 저술이 아니라 기왕에 편저 된 여러 불교문헌 가운데 당시 <직지심체(直指心體)>의 선풍에 요점이 될 만한 내용을 가려 편술한 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 그 내용을 살펴보면, 상편에는 과거칠불로부터 부처의 법통을 이어받은 인도의 제1조인 마가가섭(摩訶迦葉)부터 제28조인 보리달마(菩提達磨)까지의 28존과 달마(達磨)대사를 시조로 중국의 혜가(慧可), 승찬(僧璨), 도신(道信), 홍인(弘忍), 혜능(慧能)등 여섯 조사, 그리고 그 각 법사(法嗣)의 후세 고승 중 혜안(惠安)국사에 이르며, 하편에는 아호대의(鵝湖大義)화상에서 승고선사(承古禪師)에 이르기까지, 총 162분의 게(揭), 송(頌), 찬(讚), 명(銘), 서(書), 가(歌), 법어, 문답 등에서 무심선(無心禪)의 요체를 초록해 두었다. 여기에 수록된 내용은 주로 송나라에서 편찬된 <경덕전등록景(德傳燈錄)>•<선문염송(禪門拈頌)>•<치문경훈(緇門經訓)>•<조당집(祖堂集)> 등의 역대 조사의 전기가 실려있는 사전류(史傳類) 불교문헌이 망라되어 있다. 청주의 흥덕사에서 간행된 세계 최고의 금속활자본은 프랑스 국립도서관에 하권 1책만 소장되어 있으며, 국립중앙도서관에는 목판본 전권이 소장되어 있다.
