Handwritten and illuminated emakimono (paper roll painting). Monthly record of events or seasonal plays of a year in Kyoto, which include: Intriguing play called ‘guta,’ ball play using broomsticks and wooden sticks performed in January; wagons in bustling streets in Gion in June, fascinating chrysanthemum scent in the Double Yang Day (Lunar September 9) in September. Emakimonos of similar kinds have survived to this day in relatively larger number. They are thought to have been produced in large number by the order of Daimyō who admired elegant Kyoto culture.(en)
