A book for women education authored by Queen Sohye (1437~1504) in 1475 (Seongjong 6). Queen Sohye, a daughter of Han, Hwak, is the wife of King Sejo’s eldest son King Deokjong (or Crown Prince Uigyeong) and the mother of King Seongjong. She is more widely known to the public as Queen Insu.
Queen Sohye married to Crown Prince Uigyeong at age 19 and appointed as the Crown Princess after her father-in-law, Grand Prince Suyang initiated military coup and took over the government. However, her husband died at an early age after 2 years of marriage. Then her second son was appointed as the King Seongjong, and returned to the royal palace after 12 years. She found her consolation in Buddhism and put her efforts into Buddhist scripture publication.
This literature was published in 1475, the year when she was appointed as the Crown Princess. There are 7 chapters in this book: ① Women’s words and behaviors, ② Respecting parents, ③ Marriage courtesy, ④ Duties as a spouse, ⑤ Mother’s mindset, ⑥ Friendly relationship with sisters-in-law and relatives, ⑦ Frugality. This book’s intended readers were women as a whole including royal women. This book is a valuable literature as the first morality guidebook for women authored by a woman author.(en)
1475년(성종 6) 소혜왕후(1437~1504)가 여성 교육을 위해 지은 책이다. 소혜왕후는 한확의 딸로서 세조의 맏아들 덕종(의경세자)의 비이자 성종의 어머니다. 일반적으로 ‘인수대비’로 더 알려져 있다.
19살에 혼인한 소혜왕후는 혼인 직후 수양대군이 쿠데타로 왕위에 오르자 세자빈으로 책봉되었다. 하지만 혼인한 지 2년 만에 남편이 요절하고 말았다. 그 뒤 둘째아들(성종)이 왕위에 오르면서 12년 만에 궁궐로 돌아온 소혜왕후는 불교에 의지하면서 불경 간행에 힘썼다.
그리고 1475년 왕대비로 책봉된 해에 이 책을 펴냈다. 구성은 총 7장으로 ①여성의 말과 행실[언행], ②부모 섬기기[효친], ③혼인 예절[혼례], ④부부 사이의 도리[부부], ⑤어머니의 자세[모의(母儀)], ⑥동서 및 일가친척의 화목[돈목(敦睦)], ⑦절약[염검(廉儉)]이다.
왕실 여성을 포함해 일반 여성을 위해 지은 이 책은 한국 역사상 여성이 여성을 위해 쓴 최초의 교훈서로서 가치가 높다.
