1915년 미국에서 개봉한 프랜시스 포드 감독의 영화 <명금(The Broken Coin)>은 조선에서도 그 인기를 증명하듯, 영화를 토대로 쓴 딱지본 소설이 두 차례에 걸쳐 간행되었다. “탐정모험소설” 『명금』(윤병조 편역, 신명서림, 1920)과 “사진소설대활극” 『명금』(송완식 역, 영창서관, 1923)이 그것이다. “모험”이나 “대활극”이라는 표제에서 보듯, 두 소설은 영화의 역동적인 ‘움직임’을 최대한 생생하게 묘사하려고 애썼다. 당시 영화를 부르는 다른 이름은 ‘활동사진’이었고, 이를 바탕으로 한 소설의 실험적 시도가 “사진소설”이다. 이야기가 ‘무성영화’로 제작되어 시각화되고, 다시 ‘변사’의 목소리에 의해 새롭게 각색되는 과정을 거쳐 독자-관객에게 전달되었던 당대의 상황에서 “사진소설”은 여느 소설을 읽을 때와는 또 다른 상상력을 요한다.

The American film by Francis Ford <Myeong Geum (The Broken Coin)> was published into ttakjibon books for two times in Joseon along with the popularity of the movie: “Detective Novel” 『Myeong Geum』 (Translated and edited by Yoon Byeong Jo, Sin Myeong Seo Rim, 1920) and “Picture Novel Adventure” 『Myeong Geum』 (Translated by Song Wan Sik, Yeong Chang Seo Gwan, 1923). As the label mentioning ‘Adventure,’ the two books tried their best to vividly depict the active motion of the movie. It was an experimental attempt of novel to bring motion pictures to printed material, which was called ‘Picture Novel’. This was a time when stories were transformed into silent movies and adapted by silent-film narrators; “picture novels” delivered another type of experience to the readers, stimulating their imagination.
