This is one of the major works of Kim Man Jung (1637-1692). It was written in order to teach King Suk Jong for his misdeed, for expulsing Queen Min and getting married to Queen Jang. This book shows the confusion caused by concubinage, patriarchial system, and movement in class, but ends with a conclusion that says “Stay where you are”, which was ruling ideology of the ones in power. The plot is relatively detailed and the story is interesting.(en)

원작자인 서포 김만중(1637~1692)의 대표작 중 하나로 이 소설은 인현왕후 ‘민씨’를 폐출하고 후궁 ‘장씨’[희빈]를 왕비로 맞아들인 ‘숙종’의 과오를 깨우칠 목적으로 창작되었다. 이 작품은 축첩제와 가부장적 가족제도, 신분상승 등 조선사회의 혼란과 갈등을 드러내면서 이러한 사회적 적대가 결국 ‘본분에 충실하라’는 집권층의 지배이념 아래 봉합된다. 비교적 치밀한 구성과 흥미로운 이야기로 독자를 이끈다.(ko)
