영조의 명을 받아 홍봉한 등 당대 최고의 지식인이 동원되어 편찬한 100권 40책의 문물 백과사전이다. 국가의 통치에 필수적으로 참고해야 할 정보를 하늘(象緯考), 땅(輿地孝), 행사절차(禮考), 행사음악(樂考), 군사(兵考), 법률(形考), 조세(田賦考), 국가예산(財用考), 호수와 인구(戶口考), 시장(示寂考), 관리선발(選擧考), 학교(學校考), 관직(職官考) 등 13개 항목의 순서로 분류하여 정리하였고, 금속활자로 간행하여 보급하였다.
