- Abstract
- Romance novels do not only carry secular interests. When the love story between a two people becomes a narrative, the insight of the author that understands the dominant societal value and system of the time. Romance novels normally include ‘Encouter-Date-Ordeal-Overcome’ as a narrative process. Some steps could be eliminated accordingly, but most stories include the couple’s hardship against hindrance and overcome of it. Especially, the ‘ordeal’ and ‘overcome’ parts show the author’s worldview and talent. Romance novels were the most popular genre of “ttakjibon” novels from 1910’s along with social novels. They were mostly just focused on interest, but the back side of the secular elements shows the author’s critical mind.(en)
애정소설은 단순히 ‘흥미’와 ‘재미’라는 통속적 요소만을 가지고 있지 않다. 남녀 사이의 애정문제가 서사화 되면서, 당대 사회의 지배적 가치관과 제도적 요건을 통찰하는 작가의 시선이 나타나기 때문이다. 애정소설은 남녀의 ‘만남-교제-수난-극복’이라는 서사 과정을 거친다. 창작 시기에 따라 이 중 일부가 생략될 수도 있지만, 남녀의 사랑이 방해요소를 만나서 현실적 어려움을 겪다가 이를 해결하는 방식으로 서사가 마무리된다는 점에서 공통점을 찾을 수 있다. 특히 ‘수난’과 ‘극복’이라는 서사과정이 어떠한 방식으로 나타나느냐에 따라 저자의 세계관이 드러나며 해당 작품의 위치가 결정된다. 1910년대부터 본격적으로 출간되기 시작한 딱지본 소설의 장르 중에서 애정소설은 ‘사회세태소설’과 더불어 가장 널리 읽힌 장르였으며 기본적으로 ‘흥미’와 ‘재미’라는 통속성을 바탕으로 하지만, 당대의 사회문제를 반영하여 제기하고자 했던 저자의 시각은 애정소설이라는 통속적 요소의 배면(背面)에 감추어진 주제의식과 문제의식에 주목할 필요가 있다.(ko)
