Abstract
The Joseon dynasty defined women’s role as the way a nation and a society demand it to be. This happened in the midst of social reform led by Neo-Confucianism. 『Gyeonggukdaejeon』, Joseon’s code of law with its status comparable to that of today’s Constitution, mandated 『Conduct of Three Cardinal Human Bonds』 translated into Hangeul, Korean alphabet, and educated to women. This indicates that women were also considered as subjects to ruling and governance. During the Joseon era, education meant reformation, and both by the government and by the society, textbooks for women or texts on lessons for women were published. These texts highlighted women who guarded their virtue, and taught women conduct and manners they are supposed to have.(en)
