- Abstract
- In the Joseon dynasty, a queen was on the top tier of a hierarchy of all women in palaces including royal concubines and noblemen’s wives. A queen was a delegate who performed a king’s duties in the absence of a king and a Crown Prince. Likewise with a king, a queen passed down her orders via various certified documents. She received bureaucrats’ greeting and regards, including ceremony in which officials greet a king to honor a king’s grace. A queen also had banquets hosted by herself. As such, queens were not just mere women remained in the private sphere, but arguably public figures as a king’s equal.(en)
